I recently had an opportunity to interview rapper Kirko Bangz. He seemingly has become an overnight celebrity with his catchy hit single, “What Your Name Iz”.
The 21-year old Praire View student captivated an internet audience as well as dominated the radio airwaves in his hometown of Houston, Texas. Eventually, grabbing the attention of Warner Brothers and landing a record deal.
Besides a being a talented artist, he’s also quite the comedian.
You are a student at Prairie View. What is your major in? I majored in lunch time. Nah..I majored in Communications.
How did you get your start in the business? Was it accidental? A little of both. At the age of 15, I was going through some stuff in my life. I did not have anybody to talk to about it, so I began to write. It was like my own little diary, but I would throwing to some thrower beats. Nobody new about it.
Fast forward, It just kind of happened.
When you laid down the track for “What Your Name Iz”, was that planned? No that was I think one of the best accident that ever happened to me in my life. I was actually joking around and was saying “what your name iz” and kept playing around with it. I freestyled the whole song. At first I did not like the song that much, but people liked and we ran with it from there.
What was your experience like working with DJ Drama on your mixtape, “Procrastination Kills Part 3: Gangsta Grillz Special Edition”? It was cool going out to LA and working with Drama.
So far what has your experience been since being in the business? It been both a positive experience as well as a learning experience and a lot of fun.. Sometimes I ask what the hell am I am doing. Weird.
Being young and just getting started and getting a lot of love like that.
Kinda scary, but thankful for it.
Who would you compare your style to? Would you want to be compared to anyone? No, I would not want to be compared to somebody. You would have to listen to my music, Sometimes, I tell stories, inspirational stuff and “I don’t give a f*ck” stuff too. The music that I make depends on my mood, it what I rap about – it’s contradictory. That’s just me.
What do you hope to ultimately accomplish with your music? I want to be the Michael Jackson of rap. I don’t want to get too serious with this music. I want to maintain a normal life, being close to my friends. As long as I can continue being myself and making music I will be alright.
If I were to look at your iPod who would be in your play list? My music, Blackstreet, Drake, J Cole, Pretty Ricky, Jason Mraz and John Mayer just to name a few.
If you were not doing music, what would you be doing? I would be playing basketball in the NBA.

Actress LisaRaye McCoy and her lovely daughter Kai Morae Pace cover the May 9-11, 2011 edition of Jet magazine.
In this issue, LisaRaye opens up about her relationship with her daughter; and her mother’s bout with cancer.
On Katie McCoy’s support of LisaRaye’s career from the beginning:
“My mother is a strong woman, too. She’s a caterer and giver. She loves to take acare of people,” says LisaRaye, her mother’s only child. “That has been my role with my generation…I’m a giver like that and I don’t mind because I like that and I don’t mind because I like to share..it’s no fun playing by yourself.”
While LisaRaye was breaking into the TV and film industry as a new mom, her mother moved to Los Angeles from their home in Chicago to help raise Kai. Katie McCoy says she’s still in awe of how her daughter balances work and family.
LisaRaye’s mother cancer scare:
The family faced a scare several years ago when Katie McCoy was diagnosed with cancer. She is now cancer-free but dealing with other painful health issues whtat prevent her from traveling often. LisaRaye wants her to live with her in Los Angeles, but she does said no.
And on LisaRaye’s relationship with her daughter:
Kai says she has learned a “sense of business” growing up in a celebrity household.
“Everyone seems to think that entertainment is very fun and not stressful but it’s not,” says Kai. “From my mom I learned that it’s an actual business and how to…make things work for you. Just as me being a plus-size model, I know I’m never going to be skinny, I don’t want to be skinny, so I work with what I have.”
Kai says the three ladies relate to each other differently. “Their [relationship] is more old-school…me and my mom are more on a friend basis.”
LisaRaye, daughter and her mother have such an incredible bond.
