The Canadian rap sensation, Drake has been rising to fame quickly. Many media outlets have said that Drake was signed to Lil Wayne’s Young Money label. Last week, Drake has become the center of an unprecedented bidding war between major labels.
Recently Drake clarified his affiliation with Young Money:
"I been doin' this since I was about 13," he said in an interview. 'Degrassi' is bigger than what I?m doing right now, it really is. It's bigger than any Drake, Cudi, Wale, you know, up-and-coming rap sh*t. Like I was doing mall tours with 15,000 people...I was signing autographs for three, four hours...I'm not signed to Young Money but definitely Young Money is a family to me. I'm definitely YM affiliated, you know? I have the utmost love for everybody over there, the utmost respect. Mack Maine and Jae Millz, those are like brothers to me, you know? Nicki [Minaj]...And now that I'm in this position I?m just trying to get everything all the way straight."
There has not been an official announcement as to which label Drake has signed to, according to Billboard.com, Universal Motown appeared to be the label that could land Drake.
Although another source says Universal is the closest to snagging Drake, especially given the already established relationship between Cash Money/Young Money and the label, another label has allegedly offered $2 million dollars up front in order to further persuade the young artist to join its roster instead.
"Just know that whatever label we sign to it'll be because they'll add to what we've created on our own," Drake, who offers no clues about which label he'll choose to sign with, told Billboard.com last month. "I am very happy in my situation now, which is signed to Cortez [Bryant] and Gee Roberson at Young Money and management through 'Hip Hop Since 1978.' The most important thing for me is being around my team - they are stronger than any label."
From where I sit, it looks Drake is in a really good position. Better than most!
