Meet Erin Stevenson an upcoming singing sensation straight out of tha H. I was able to catch up with her and have a chat with Erin Stevenson.

Are you a native Houstonian? Yes I am from Houston. Born and raised.

How long has music been apart of your life? Every since I could remember. I have been singing since I was about 5 year’s old, singing in church. When did you realize that music was what you wanted to pursue? When I was about 8 years old my family use to get together all the time back in Louisiana and I was the entertainment. I was always out spoken as a child. One day they asked me to sing so I sang Whitney Houston’s song, “Greatest Love of All”, then my uncle started passing around his hat and everyone starting putting money in the hat. When it was all said and done, he collected about $200 dollars and my family gave all the money to me. Right then and there I knew I wanted to be a singer. The only thing that made me happy was singing. I went to school and got a job, but I realized that the only thing that made me happy was singing.

Do you write any of your material? I write all my material. I try my best to pull people in that I trust and that are passionate about their art form.

How would you describe your musical style? Raw, edgy and sexiness of Janet Jackson and realness and passion of Mary J Blige. Combine those two. And you have it. And if you had to classify your music what category would you place yourself in? I classify my music as urban pop. It’s a little hood, because that’s where I am from and it has a crossover appeal.

Where do you draw your inspiration? I get inspiration from this world and life. I have always been the go to person for advice among my friends. I use my life experiences.

I see that your first single, “Hott” was featured on the comedy movie, Hair Show starring Vivica A. Foxx and Mo’Nique . How did that happen? That happened a couple years ago. That song was actually written for Alicia Keys and produced by Platinum Producer E Poppi. We missed our deadline. However they liked the song so much and they kept it. Let’s just say I was in the right place at the right time.

How do feel you have grown musically since your start in you music career? I have a natural gift and have made it my priority to master my craft. I have grown by increasing my work ethic and my confidence has increased tremendously. I have grown with my craft; it is as though I am one with my music now.

What is the ultimate goal? To be heard. My reward is to be heard and when people approach me telling how I have touched people, then I am happy. And definitely the money is a plus, but being heard is definitely the highlight. Do you care about the Grammy or is it strictly about the art? You have to love what you do. Yes I would love to have a Grammy but at the end of the day it is the art.

Who would you love to work with? Michael Jackson, Patti Labelle, Teddy Riley, Janet Jackson and Lil Wayne. I am a huge fan of Michael Jackson and would love to work with Michael Jackson. My experience with Janet Jackson was great and would definitely; love to work with her again. Why would you like to Lil Wayne? He is so different from your other choices. His voice and delivery is amazing. He is unique and creative.

Are there any deals in the works? My single “Sweat” was distributed through Universal. The phone is continuously ringing, but the industry is weird right now. I am in hustle mode. I am trying to work, push my music. This is a business.

What do you do when you not working? I am a home body. I ride motorcycles. I have been riding bikes since I was 16 years old.

What would be in your iPod? I love Maxwell, Michael Jackson, Lenny Kravitz, Lil Wayne and UGK. Theses are just few, I enjoy a variety of music.

Shouts out to Alverez of Bookoo Beats!
