Mary J. Blige has been cleared of copyright infringement. A lawsuit was filed in January by Leonard Jones and James White against Mary J. Blige and others stemming from her hot single, “Family Affair” which was released in 2001.
According to the lawsuit, “Family Affair” seemingly had a very close resemblance to another artist Benevolence’s demo track “Party Ain’t Crunk”, who was previously managed by James White. And even Dr. Dre got mixed up in this mess, he was initially named in this lawsuit, however later he dismissed due to the courts ruled there was a “lack of personal jurisdiction”.
Universal Records demanded the plantiffs to provide hard proof somehow showing proof the lyrical content in deed resembled “Family Affair”.
Unfortunately for the plaintiffs reasonable cause was not found regarding the independent creation of “Family Affair”. It probably would have helped if the plaintiffs had respond with some evidence.
