India.Arie Heading To Broadway

India.Arie will hit the stage under the Broadway lights. She is set to make her Broadway debut, in a new production of Ntozake Shange’s play, “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf.”

Whoopi Goldberg will be the producer on this project and this play will be directed by Shirley Jo Finney. The choreographer will be three time Tony winner Hinton Battle.

“Performed by a cast of seven. ‘For Colored Girls…’ is a stunning and explosive series of prose poems and stories illuminating the identity of black women in America, as they reveal themselves, their lives, triumphs, hardships and ultimately their discovery of inner strength and love,” producers of the play said in a statement. “This re-envisioned production of ‘For Colored Girls…’ will feature new and updated material from Ms. Shange. Complete casting will be announced soon.”

Preview performances are to begin August 19 at Broadway’s Circle to the Square Theatre. Opening night is scheduled for September 8 later this year.

It will not surprise me if India.Arie does exceptionally well.
